Maritime Security To Be In Focus At ASEAN Summit

In his address at the three-day summit, Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to upholding principles such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, equality, and independence within the region

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, explained the critical role of maritime security, trade, and clean energy in shaping Australia’s future ties with the ASEAN bloc during the ongoing summit in Melbourne. The summit, celebrating its 50th anniversary of Australia’s relations with ASEAN, highlights the importance of cooperation amidst concerns over Beijing’s increasing presence in the South China Sea.

In his address at the three-day summit, Albanese reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to upholding principles such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, equality, and independence within the region. He stressed on the need for joint efforts with ASEAN to ensure a secure, resilient, open, inclusive, and prosperous regional environment.

Albanese emphasised practical cooperation on marine sustainability and security, highlighting the importance of connection between Australia and ASEAN. His remarks come amid rising tensions, exemplified by the Philippines summoning China’s deputy chief of mission to protest alleged aggressive actions by Chinese naval forces in the South China Sea.

The South China Sea, a crucial  strategic space for over $3 trillion worth of annual ship-borne commerce, remains a focal point of contention between Beijing and neighbouring countries. Despite a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration invalidating China’s expansive claims, Beijing continues to assert its territorial dominance, leading to ongoing disputes with countries like the Philippines.

During the summit, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim echoed concerns about what he termed as a growing “China-phobia” in the West. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Anwar downplayed the risk of conflict in the South China Sea, claiming that such concerns had been exaggerated.

As the summit progresses, expectations are high for a joint declaration outlining ASEAN’s stance on global issues such as the Israel-Gaza conflict and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The declaration, anticipated to be released later today, underscores ASEAN’s commitment to addressing pressing international challenges while fostering regional cooperation and stability.
