Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura bolster defences with curfews and increased patrols
The northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura, which share an international boundary with Bangladesh, tightened security along the border on Monday following violent political unrest in the neighbouring country.
In Meghalaya, authorities imposed a night curfew along its 443 km border with Bangladesh. “This curfew will be implemented up to 200 metres inside the Indian territory from the border pillar from 6 pm to 6 am every day until the situation improves,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said.
In Mizoram, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Lalbiakthanga Khiangte stated that state police personnel stationed along the 318 km border with Bangladesh have been instructed to conduct round-the-clock patrols.
In Tripura, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been directed to increase surveillance along the state’s 856 km border after reports of people from Bangladesh entering the state since Monday afternoon. “We are closely monitoring the border, which is semi-porous and has many unfenced areas,” a BSF officer commented.
These measures aim to prevent any spillover of the unrest from Bangladesh into the bordering Indian states and ensure the security of the local populations.
