Elderly Man Killed, Five Injured In Suspected Militant Rocket Attack In Manipur

Improvised rocket strikes the former chief minister’s residence, injuring five, including a child

An elderly man lost his life, and five others were injured when suspected militants launched a bomb attack on a residential area in Moirang, Bishnupur district, on Friday afternoon, according to officials.

The rocket, which appeared to be improvised, fell within the compound of former Chief Minister Mairembam Koireng’s residence. It was the second rocket fired in the district on the same day. “The elderly man, who was preparing for religious rituals in the compound, was killed instantly when the bomb exploded,” an official stated. Five others, including a 13-year-old girl, sustained injuries in the blast.

The explosion occurred around two kilometres from the INA headquarters, where, on April 14, 1944, Lieutenant Colonel Shaukat Ali of the Indian National Army (INA) hoisted the Tricolour Flag of free India under the leadership of INA Supreme Commander Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

Earlier in the day, another rocket was fired from a hilltop area, targeting the low-lying residential neighbourhood of Tronglaobi, about 45 km from Imphal, the state capital.

Recently,Two people were killed and 10 injured, including two policemen and a TV reporter, in firing by “suspected Kuki militants” in Imphal West’s Koutruk area.

According to police, militants fired indiscriminately from hilltop positions towards the low-lying valley areas of Koutruk and neighbouring Kadangband. Several houses were also damaged due to heavy shelling by the militants.
