Star Health and Allied Insurance Company announced Monday that it has found no evidence implicating its Chief Information Security Officer in a recent data leak incident. The company stated that supposed communications between the CISO and a hacker, circulated as evidence of wrongdoing, were fabrications created by the hacker.
In August, Star Health encountered a significant data breach, with customer data, including sensitive medical information, reportedly accessible through chatbots on Telegram and other websites. In response, the insurer notified local authorities and launched an investigation into the incident. Additionally, Star Health pursued legal action to compel Telegram and the hacker to remove the leaked data from online platforms.
The company also clarified that the websites and Telegram chatbots used by the hacker to disseminate the data have since been taken down. “We reported alleged unauthorized data access to the authorities and took swift measures to address the issue,” Star Health noted in its statement. The insurer underscored its commitment to maintaining strong data security protocols and protecting customer information amid evolving cyber threats.
This incident has highlighted the growing cybersecurity challenges within the insurance sector, as companies strive to safeguard sensitive data from increasingly sophisticated cybercriminal activities.
