India Launches Year-Long Celebrations for 75 Years of Constitution, Focus on Security and Inclusivity
India has begun a historic year-long celebration to mark 75 years since the adoption of its Constitution under the campaign *“Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhimaan”* (Our Constitution, Our Pride). Alongside honouring the framers of the Constitution and reaffirming core values, the campaign also emphasises the need for national security and societal inclusivity, as outlined in a press release from the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
November 26, observed as Constitution Day, commemorates the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. The document came into force on January 26, 1950, heralding India’s emergence as a sovereign democratic republic.
President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint session of both Houses of Parliament in the Central Hall, formally inaugurating the year-long celebrations. She highlighted the government’s commitment to uplifting all sections of society while underscoring the importance of safeguarding national security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the event, marking the significance of the 75th anniversary.
In her address, President Murmu stated, *“The government has given opportunities to all sections of the society, especially the weaker sections. The poor are getting permanent houses, electricity facilities are being provided, and world-class infrastructure is being created on a large scale in the country.”* She also stressed the role of a strong, secure nation in ensuring that the benefits of development reach everyone.
The celebrations included the release of a commemorative coin and stamp dedicated to the milestone. Two books—*“Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse”* and *“Making of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journey”*—were also launched, providing a deep dive into the historical drafting process and the evolution of the Constitution.
India’s Constituent Assembly first convened on December 9, 1946, in the Central Hall of the old Parliament House. The Lok Sabha archives describe the chamber on that day as elegantly decorated, with bright lamps symbolising the gravity of the occasion.
The *“Hamara Samvidhan, Hamara Swabhimaan”* campaign not only celebrates the values of justice, equality, and liberty but also highlights the need to bolster national security in today’s evolving geopolitical landscape. The initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding both the democratic fabric and the security of the nation.
