As preparations for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 enter the final stages, Prayagraj is gearing up to host over 450 million devotees from across the globe. Scheduled from 13 January to 26 February, this spiritual gathering holds immense cultural significance but is also under heightened scrutiny due to emerging security and cyber threats.
Security Measures Intensified
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have ramped up vigilance amidst concerns over potential terror activities, including what intelligence reports are describing as “rail jihad.” Given that a majority of devotees rely on trains to reach Prayagraj, the security of the railway network has become a primary focus.
Prashant Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP) Uttar Pradesh, has directed comprehensive measures to ensure safety during the event. These include enhanced surveillance on social media platforms, inspections at key public areas like hotels and railway stations, and a special focus on vulnerable sections of railway tracks.
The threat was underscored by the interception of a video from a known terrorist, Farhatullah Gauri, allegedly linked to Pakistan-based organisations. The video reportedly outlines methods to sabotage rail infrastructure. To counter this, authorities have conducted mock drills at Prayagraj Railway Station involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local disaster management teams. These efforts have been bolstered by advanced surveillance tools, such as drones and high-resolution CCTV cameras, alongside increased police patrolling.
Tackling Cyber Frauds
While physical security remains a concern, digital vulnerabilities have also come to light. The Prayagraj Police recently unearthed a large-scale cyber fraud operation exploiting the Maha Kumbh. Fraudsters created fake websites offering discounted accommodations, VIP services, and other facilities, targeting unsuspecting devotees.
Officials are urging attendees to exercise caution when booking services online and to verify the authenticity of websites before making transactions. Public awareness campaigns are being rolled out to educate devotees about these digital scams.

The combined efforts of law enforcement, intelligence agencies, and local authorities aim to ensure the safety and well-being of devotees. With mock drills, proactive surveillance, and swift action against threats, organisers are working to provide a secure environment for one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings.
As the Maha Kumbh approaches, the focus remains on maintaining a balance between celebrating its spiritual essence and addressing the logistical and security challenges posed by its vast scale.
