India & EU To Collaborate On Technology & Trade : Minister Piyush Goyal

The discussions focused on creating a robust, commercially meaningful trade agenda and expediting the finalisation of a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA)

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced that India and the European Union (EU) are set to strengthen economic ties by collaborating on advanced technologies and securing critical raw material supply chains. This initiative was discussed during his meeting with Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, held in Brussels on 18–19 January.

The discussions focused on creating a robust, commercially meaningful trade agenda and expediting the finalisation of a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement (FTA). According to the Commerce and Industry Ministry’s statement on Sunday, the trade agenda would address tariff and non-tariff barriers, streamline regulations, and improve cost competitiveness to benefit businesses on both sides.

“India would work together with the EU for developing cutting-edge technologies, securing critical raw material supply chains, and building resilient supply chains—reducing dependencies on non-market economies and fostering closer economic ties between India and the EU,” the ministry said.

Focus On Trade & Sustainable Development

Both sides emphasised the importance of increasing cooperation in trade and sustainable development while considering respective levels of economic development and the principle of common but differentiated responsibility. This approach aims to create equitable opportunities for growth while addressing global challenges such as climate change and supply chain vulnerabilities.

“The two leaders outlined political directions to both the teams to develop a mutually beneficial agenda for trade and investment and a robust FTA in an expedited manner to meet global challenges,” the ministry added.

India-EU Trade & Technology Council

The leaders reviewed progress made by the trade and investment group under the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), which serves as a platform for advancing bilateral collaboration in technology, trade, and investment. Legacy issues were addressed, and a roadmap was established for continuous consultations between senior officials and ministerial-level representatives.

The council also aims to create a framework for addressing dependencies on non-market economies by diversifying supply chains and fostering innovation through technological cooperation.

Strengthening Economic Partnership

This partnership comes as India and the EU look to bolster their strategic relationship by aligning their trade and investment policies to mutual advantage. The emphasis on developing cutting-edge technologies and securing raw materials reflects a shared goal of fostering economic resilience and technological innovation in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

With the roadmap in place and renewed political commitment, the India-EU partnership aims to address global challenges, enhance economic cooperation, and build a sustainable and mutually beneficial trade framework.
