Chairman of the Leh Hill Development Council, Tashi Gyalson, chaired a review meeting this week to assess and strengthen security measures for monasteries, commonly referred to as ‘Gompas’, in the region. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Chief Planning Officer Tsewang Gyalson, Culture Deputy Secretary Tsewang Paljor, Leh Gompa Association (LGA) President Gyen Tsering Angdu, and LGA General Secretary Tsering Chosphel.
A major focus of the meeting was on enhancing the security infrastructure of monasteries, with particular attention given to the installation of CCTV cameras. Officials confirmed that the tender for installing CCTV systems has been approved. The department responsible has already been briefed on the tendering process, ensuring that the necessary procedures are underway.
In addition to immediate security concerns, the participants discussed the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at outlining a collaborative approach towards the security and development of monasteries. The MoU is expected to formalise cooperation between the Culture Academy, the Leh Gompa Association, and the Hill Council. According to officials, the agreement will be finalised and signed in the coming days.
Chairman Gyalson reiterated the Hill Council’s commitment to supporting the monasteries, assuring the Leh Gompa Association of full backing for both their security needs and broader developmental initiatives. He highlighted the importance of preserving the cultural and spiritual heritage associated with these monasteries, stating that the Council would extend all necessary assistance to safeguard and promote the region’s rich cultural legacy.
