This deal surpasses Alphabet’s previous largest acquisition—the USD 12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility in 2012
Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., has announced its largest acquisition to date, agreeing to purchase cybersecurity firm Wiz Inc. for USD 32 billion in cash. This strategic move aims to bolster Google’s cloud computing services amid intensifying competition and a surge in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
Founded in 2020 by a group of Israeli entrepreneurs, Wiz has rapidly emerged as a leader in cloud security, offering tools that safeguard data stored across various cloud platforms. The company’s innovative solutions have attracted significant attention, leading to a valuation of approximately USD 30 billion prior to the acquisition.
The acquisition is set to integrate Wiz’s security platform into Google Cloud’s infrastructure, enhancing security measures for businesses operating in multi-cloud environments. Notably, Wiz’s products will continue to be available across major cloud services, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, ensuring a broad reach for its cybersecurity solutions.
This deal surpasses Alphabet’s previous largest acquisition—the USD 12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility in 2012. It also ranks among the most significant transactions in the cybersecurity industry to date.
The timing of this acquisition aligns with Alphabet’s efforts to expand its cloud computing division, which has seen substantial growth. In 2023, Google’s cloud business generated USD 26.3 billion in revenue, a figure that soared to USD 43.2 billion in 2024, reflecting a 64 per cent increase.
However, the deal is expected to undergo rigorous scrutiny from antitrust regulators, especially given Alphabet’s dominant position in various tech sectors. The company has previously faced legal challenges concerning its market practices, and this acquisition may attract additional attention from regulatory bodies.
Despite these potential hurdles, industry analysts view the acquisition as a strategic move to strengthen Google’s position in the cloud computing market, particularly in enhancing security offerings—a critical factor for businesses increasingly reliant on cloud services.
The acquisition is anticipated to be finalised in 2026, pending regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Upon completion, Wiz will operate under the Google Cloud umbrella, continuing its mission to simplify and enhance cloud security for organisations worldwide.
