The UK government has announced EUR 450,000 in funding for six British technology firms to develop advanced airport screening technology aimed at improving security and reducing passenger delays. The funding, provided by the Department for Transport, is part of a broader initiative to enhance aviation security and maintain the UK’s competitiveness in the global transport sector.

The selected companies, based across the country, will focus on developing innovative scanning equipment designed to improve threat detection while minimising false alarms and manual checks. This, in turn, is expected to streamline screening processes at airports, making travel more efficient and convenient for passengers.

Boosting UK’s Aviation Sector

With the aviation industry contributing EUR 20 billion to the UK economy, ongoing investment in security technology is seen as essential for the sector’s long-term growth. In addition to grant funding, the programme will offer tailored business support workshops led by experts at the Connected Places Catapult, the initiative’s delivery partner. These workshops will provide mentorship and advice on key topics such as technical development, corporate finance, regulation, trial design, and customer needs.

Aviation Minister Mike Kane highlighted the significance of the investment, stating:

“Safety is our top priority, and this funding will strengthen the UK’s already rigorous security standards, bolster our competitiveness internationally and ensure that passengers can continue to fly with ease of mind.

“As part of our Plan for Change, we are turbocharging investment in the aviation sector and going further and faster with expansion plans to kickstart economic growth and deliver high-skilled jobs across the country.”

Strengthening Innovation & Security

Connected Places Catapult has a strong track record in supporting government-led innovation programmes, including the Transport Research and Innovation Grants (TRIG) initiative, which drives technological advancements in the UK’s transport sector.

Erika Lewis, Chief Executive Officer at Connected Places Catapult, emphasised the importance of efficient and secure transport systems, saying:

“Making transport efficient, inclusive and safe is a key priority for Connected Places Catapult. By supporting innovators with ideas to further strengthen security at airports, not only are we helping to improve the passenger experience, but we are also supporting companies to develop and scale here in the UK.”

The government’s investment is expected to accelerate the adoption of smart screening technologies, ensuring the UK’s airports remain secure while enhancing operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
