Security Steps Up: How Advanced Sensors Transforming Safety & Efficiency

From gas leaks to wildfires, new sensor technologies are redefining the mission of security systems across industries

The landscape of physical security is undergoing a profound transformation, evolving beyond the traditional domains of cameras and access control. Today, cutting-edge sensor technologies — particularly those harnessing thermal and optical gas imaging — are becoming essential to proactive safety, environmental stewardship, and industrial efficiency.

According to Matt Stratman, Director of Global Business Development at Teledyne FLIR, this shift is pushing security operations centres (SOCs) into a new role: central hubs for both asset intelligence and environmental monitoring.

“A potential early indicator of equipment failure could be a rise in temperature,” Stratman explains. He notes that integrating high-accuracy temperature-monitoring cameras into SOCs gives organisations real-time insights into critical infrastructure. This not only enhances security but also enables rapid internal response, minimising costly equipment failures and unplanned downtime.

Historically, security infrastructures focused on visual surveillance and intrusion alerts. But today, a growing number of organisations are embedding sensors that monitor heat levels, gas emissions, and other environmental data points into their existing security systems. This convergence of operational monitoring and physical security marks a significant step towards holistic risk management.

The impact of these technologies is particularly evident in mitigating environmental risks. Amid rising wildfire incidents, industries with outdoor assets prone to overheating or electrical faults are prioritising continuous monitoring. Thermal imaging, Stratman notes, has become indispensable. “There is growing demand for cameras that can continuously monitor volatile environments where temperature fluctuates unpredictably,” he says.

Such systems have already proven critical for emergency responders, helping track wildfire progression and detect heat signatures through thick smoke and darkness — scenarios where conventional cameras fail. This kind of situational awareness can be the difference between containment and catastrophe.

Gas leak detection is another field where sensor innovation is driving change. While handheld optical gas imaging (OGI) devices have long been standard tools in leak detection and repair (LDAR) efforts, they require manual scanning and on-site presence. Now, fixed OGI cameras with integrated analytics are revolutionising the process.

“With a specially engineered fixed OGI camera and advanced gas detection analytics, companies can simply add this solution to their existing security infrastructure,” says Stratman. The result: around-the-clock gas leak monitoring that enhances both safety and compliance, while reducing emissions and supporting environmental, social and governance (ESG) targets.

These advanced cameras can identify a wide array of invisible gases, triggering real-time alerts and contributing to healthier, more sustainable operations.

Looking ahead, Stratman believes the integration of smart sensors will extend further into industrial environments. Security integrators — traditionally focused on access and video solutions — are increasingly seen as strategic partners in manufacturing.

Manufacturing plants, filled with mission-critical machinery, can benefit significantly from thermal and acoustic sensors designed for predictive maintenance. By identifying anomalies such as overheating or vibration changes early, these systems can prevent equipment failure and extend asset lifecycles.

In doing so, the security sector is redefining its identity. It is no longer simply the gatekeeper of premises, but a key enabler of operational excellence, safety, and sustainability. As the integration of intelligent sensors becomes mainstream, security infrastructures will not only protect but also inform, empower, and future-proof industries.

This evolution signals a future where surveillance systems do more than observe — they anticipate, respond, and contribute to a more resilient world.
