X-ray machines, metal detectors and surveillance systems remain central to airport security
The global airport security market is forecast to grow sharply over the next decade, driven by rising passenger numbers and tighter government regulations, according to new research.
A study by Meticulous Research projects the market will reach USD 25.27bn (£19.6bn) by 2032, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 8.6% from 2025. The report points to growing investment in advanced technologies as a key factor in the sector’s expansion.
X-ray machines, metal detectors and surveillance systems remain central to airport security, but biometric devices such as facial recognition and fingerprint scanners are expected to play an increasingly prominent role. These technologies offer faster and more accurate passenger identification, reducing fraud and cutting waiting times.
Automation and digitalisation are also reshaping security operations. Airports are adopting automated baggage screening systems with advanced imaging and explosives detection, while artificial intelligence is being used to support smart surveillance, threat detection and real-time analysis.
Emerging tools such as AI-powered behavioural analytics, autonomous drones and integrated security management platforms are expected to move into mainstream use by the end of the decade. Analysts say these innovations will transform airport security, boosting both effectiveness and efficiency.
However, the report warns that the high cost of advanced systems and the challenges of upgrading existing infrastructure could hold back adoption in some regions.
By 2032, the study suggests, AI and biometrics will underpin a fundamentally different security landscape, offering predictive analytics, anomaly detection and automated responses to potential threats – capabilities designed to reduce human error and speed up decision-making.
