Armed Police Force (APF) personnel have been deployed in the customs area of the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Nepal, marking a significant shift in security protocols at the country’s primary aviation hub.

Previously, security responsibilities in the customs area of TIA were entrusted to guards from private security companies, specifically 18 employees of Star Security who were tasked with customs checking. However, concerns over potential corruption and smuggling arose due to civilian involvement in this critical area of airport security.

In response to these concerns and with the recommendation of the TIA Customs Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved the deployment of APF personnel to bolster security measures. This decision was prompted by a notable increase in illegal gold smuggling activities, which highlighted the need for a more robust security presence.

Effective Monday, a team of 30 APF personnel, under the command of an Inspector, assumed responsibility for customs security at TIA. Working in collaboration with customs staff, these armed forces personnel will ensure strict adherence to customs regulations and enhance overall security at the airport.

Tokraj Pandey, head of the customs office, affirmed the significance of this deployment, stating, “Now the armed police are monitoring customs checking at TIA.” This move reflects a concerted effort to combat smuggling activities and uphold the integrity of customs procedures at the airport.

The deployment of APF personnel represents a proactive measure aimed at addressing security vulnerabilities and safeguarding against illicit activities in the customs area of TIA. By introducing a dedicated armed security presence, authorities aim to instill confidence in travelers and stakeholders while reinforcing the airport’s commitment to maintaining stringent security standards.
