Bermuda Struggles to Restore Public Services After Lethal Cyberattack

Bermuda Cyberattack
Following the cyberattack on Wednesday, public order on the island was significantly disrupted, with authorities attributing the attack to Russia

Bermuda is actively working towards the restoration of its public services, which were disrupted by a cyberattack described as “sophisticated and deliberate” by the island’s premier, E. David Burt. In a recent press conference, Burt mentioned that authorities are conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators, indicating that they are likely from Russia. However, he refrained from disclosing further details, citing national security concerns.

Regarding the restoration efforts, Burt stated that they are well underway, and they are in the process of creating a timeline for the public to follow in order to safely bring their systems back online. The breach occurred on Wednesday evening and was detected by officials on Thursday morning. In response, Bermuda’s law enforcement and the Department of Information and Digital Technologies attempted to identify the intrusion point and subsequently had to disconnect all devices connected to the network before ultimately taking the network offline.

While critical services such as transportation, education, and healthcare remain unaffected, the Royal Gazette newspaper reported that the government’s email system was offline, and certain state agencies, including the Department of Planning, were unable to process new applications.
