A disturbing trend has emerged as scammers exploit advanced AI voice cloning technology to dupe unsuspecting individuals. In a recent incident, a businessman from Mumbai fell victim to this nefarious scheme, losing a substantial sum of Rs 80,000 to a fraudulent call purporting to be from the Indian Embassy in Dubai.
This began with a heart-wrenching call informing the businessman that his son had been arrested and faced the life imprisonment. Such distressing news would naturally unsettle any parent. What escalated the scam was the claim that the father could hear his son’s voice on the phone, pleading for help to secure bail by paying a ransom.
Overwhelmed with concern and urgency, the father, identified as Vinod, complied with the demands. Without verifying the authenticity of the call or consulting his son directly, he instructed his office staff to transfer the money, which was promptly done via GPay. The fraudster swiftly terminated the call upon receiving the payment, leaving Vinod to realize the deception only after attempting to contact his son independently and confirming his safety in Dubai.
Authorities have since launched an investigation, with the cybercrime unit tracing the bank details in pursuit of the perpetrators. These incidents underscore the insidious nature of AI voice clone scams, which exploit fear and desperation to manipulate victims into divulging sensitive information or parting with their money.
