CCTV Mandate For Indian Merchant Vessels To Bolster Maritime Safety

The installation of CCTV systems on vessels is expected to serve multiple purposes

In a significant move to enhance maritime safety and security, the Directorate-General of Shipping has directed all Indian-flagged merchant vessels exceeding 500 gross tonnage to install CCTV systems. The directive, aimed at improving onboard safety measures, is part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise the country’s maritime operations and ensure the well-being of seafarers.

Strengthening Maritime Operations

The installation of CCTV systems on vessels is expected to serve multiple purposes. First, it will assist in responding to critical incidents such as man-overboard situations, collisions, and onboard casualties by providing crucial evidence for investigations. Additionally, real-time footage from the CCTV systems will facilitate quicker and more effective search and rescue (SAR) operations, providing invaluable support to SAR agencies during emergencies.

Beyond safety, the mandate aims to bolster onboard security by acting as a deterrent to criminal activities and aiding in post-incident investigations.

Technical Specifications

The circular issued by the Directorate outlines specific requirements for CCTV installations, ensuring that the systems are robust and effective. These include:

Continuous Operation: The systems must operate 24/7 to capture all onboard activities.

Data Storage: Vessels must store footage for a minimum of 90 days to ensure availability for investigations.

Centralised Monitoring: A centralised monitoring station onboard will enable the crew to access live footage and respond promptly to potential threats or emergencies.

Commitment To Maritime Safety

The directive reflects the government’s commitment to improving safety standards across the maritime sector, aligning Indian shipping practices with global norms. By integrating advanced surveillance technology, authorities aim to address long-standing challenges in incident response and onboard security.

This measure also underscores the importance of leveraging technology to protect the lives of Indian seafarers, enhance operational transparency, and ensure compliance with international safety protocols.

The implementation of this initiative is expected to mark a significant step forward in safeguarding the interests of India’s merchant navy and reinforcing the country’s standing in global maritime operations.
