Long queues and hectic security checks at immigration counters in airports may soon be a thing of the past for international travellers if the government’s ambitious plans. Discussions have been underway to introduce cutting-edge technologies, including e-biometrics, aimed at expediting the entire process and enhancing the overall travel experience.
In a recent high-level meeting chaired by Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, top officials from major airport operators, the Bureau of Immigration, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), and the Ministry of Civil Aviation convened to deliberate on innovative design models to streamline immigration and security procedures for international travellers.
Minister Scindia shared insights from the meeting, expressing optimism about the potential of new technologies such as e-biometrics to revolutionise the way airports handle international passengers. These advancements are part of a broader vision to establish India as a prominent international aviation hub.
The discussions encompassed various aspects, including potential changes in airport interior design and the cross-utilisation of security equipment like X-ray machines between domestic and international terminals. Drawing inspiration from successful international airport models, such as those in Singapore and Canada, authorities aim to adapt best practices to enhance efficiency and passenger experience.
Efforts to alleviate congestion at major airports, particularly during peak travel periods, were also a focal point of the meeting. Officials explored strategies to optimise the utilisation of X-ray Baggage Inspection System (XBIS) machines at Delhi airport, aiming to minimise waiting times for passengers by ensuring the availability of adequate screening equipment.
To facilitate the smooth relocation of security equipment between terminals, potential modifications to existing airport layouts are being considered. Additionally, the government is actively conducting proof of concept trials for the implementation of e-gates and e-biometrics for immigration, signalling a shift towards more streamlined and technology-driven processes.
Furthermore, comprehensive assessments of manpower requirements for security personnel, including CISF officers and immigration officials, have been conducted. These assessments factor in the anticipated expansion of existing airports and the development of new ones, including those in Jewar and Navi Mumbai.
As the government continues to prioritise enhancing airport security and efficiency, these initiatives represent a significant step towards modernising India’s aviation infrastructure and elevating the country’s standing in the global travel landscape. With a focus on leveraging innovative technologies and international best practices, the aim is to create a seamless and hassle-free travel experience for passengers while ensuring the highest standards of security and safety.
