The fight between government forces and anti-Junta groups near the Indo-Myanmar border has triggered an influx of Burmese refugees to Mizoram
India has recently communicated its security concerns to Myanmar, focusing on challenges along the border exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between government forces and anti-junta groups. The fighting near the Indo-Myanmar border has resulted in a notable influx of Burmese refugees into Mizoram, prompting the need for bilateral discussions.
During the India-Myanmar foreign office consultations held in New Delhi, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi highlighted the comprehensive nature of the security concerns addressed, with a specific emphasis on the challenges posed by refugee flows. The situation has been a point of attention for India, especially given the potential spillover effects into its northeastern states, including Nagaland and Manipur, which share a 1,640 kilometres long border with Myanmar.
India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and the restoration of democracy in Myanmar. Last month, India called for a cessation of hostilities between Myanmar’s military and the anti-junta groups operating near the border. The heightened tensions and hostilities in key towns and regions along the border have been closely monitored by the Indian military establishment.
The unrest in Myanmar began following a military coup in February 2021, leading to widespread protests and demands for the reinstatement of democratic governance. In response, Myanmar’s military has employed airstrikes against its opponents and groups engaged in armed resistance.
Given the strategic importance of Myanmar as a neighbouring country, India remains committed to encouraging stability, peace, and the eventual return to democratic governance in the region. The recent discussions underscore India’s active involvement in addressing the security challenges along its border with Myanmar and promoting a diplomatic resolution to the complex situation.
