India Launches INS Jatayu To Give Major Boost To Naval Efficiency

The establishment of INS Jatayu adds to India’s existing naval presence in Lakshadweep, with INS Dweeprakshak already stationed on Kavaratti island

India has raised its military capabilities with the inauguration of INS Jatayu, a new naval base strategically located in the Lakshadweep islands. Positioned as the nearest major military facility to the Maldives, INS Jatayu stands as country’s second naval base in the island chain, complementing a  joint airfield on Minicoy Island. Experts believe that the development represents a substantial boost to India’s defence capabilities, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring regional security.

The establishment of INS Jatayu adds to India’s existing naval presence in Lakshadweep, with INS Dweeprakshak already stationed on Kavaratti island. Situated approximately 258 km from the Maldives, the new base will enhance New Delhi’s operational surveillance capabilities in the vital sea lines of communication.

In a statement, the Navy highlighted Minicoy’s significance as a pivotal location within the Lakshadweep archipelago, strategically positioned to monitor maritime activities in the region. The establishment of INS Jatayu is expected to bolster anti-piracy and anti-narcotic operations, contributing to overall security infrastructure at the strategically important islands. In a statement,

The Indian Navy  said that the base will fortify its “foothold in the Lakshadweep islands, while expanding capacity building, operational reach, and sustainability in the region.”

The commissioning of INS Jatayu coincides with plans to develop a dual-use airfield at Minicoy, as reported, this development is of strategic importance, particularly amidst India’s ongoing withdrawal of personnel from the Maldives, as requested by Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu. With the first batch of personnel scheduled to depart by March 10, the establishment of INS Jatayu underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its maritime capabilities in the region.

Naval Detachment Minicoy, established in the early 1980s, paved the way for the establishment of an independent naval base, aimed at enhancing the overall operational capability of the Indian Navy. The presence of INS Jatayu is expected to strengthen the Navy’s role as a first responder in the region, while also bolstering connectivity with the mainland.

INS Jatayu is poised to evolve into a larger base over time, with the capability to accommodate aircraft carriers. This expansion will significantly enhance military surveillance capabilities in the region, where currently only one airport at Agatti serves as a primary aviation hub.

The commissioning ceremony of INS Jatayu will be attended by aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, further highlighting the strategic importance of this development in reinforcing India’s naval presence and capabilities in the Arabian Sea region.
