Delhi marked the first high-level engagement between the UK and India following the formation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour government three weeks ago
India and the UK have agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations in a time-bound manner, focusing on contemporary realities. This announcement was made by the Indian External Affairs Ministry during the visit of UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy to New Delhi on Wednesday. Lammy held separate meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss various aspects of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
A key highlight of these high-level meetings was the launch of a Technology Security Initiative. This initiative aims to bolster collaboration between India and the UK in several priority sectors, including telecommunications, critical minerals, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. According to the Indian government, the initiative is designed to elevate the strategic partnership between the two countries to the next level. The Technology Security Initiative will be coordinated and monitored by the National Security Advisors (NSAs) of both countries, emphasizing its significance and the need for close oversight.
The discussions during Lammy’s visit focused on expanding cooperation in various areas. The priority sectors for India and the UK include trade and investment, defence and security, migration and mobility, information technology and artificial intelligence, science and technology, innovation, climate, and green energy. Both countries are keen to enhance trade ties and boost mutual investments. There is also a shared interest in strengthening defence cooperation and ensuring security in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. Facilitating easier movement of people between the two countries is a critical area of focus, along with advancing collaboration in IT and AI, which is seen as vital for both economies. Furthermore, there is a commitment to foster innovation and scientific research through joint efforts, and both nations aim to work together on climate issues and the transition to green energy.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed optimism about the future of India-UK relations. He stated, “The UK-India relationship is indispensable. It’s fantastic to be in Delhi as we announce a UK-India Technology Security Initiative to boost investment, create jobs, and address future challenges,” on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also reflected on the productive discussions held with Lammy. He said, “Noted the immense potential to take forward the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, building on close links in trade and economy, defence and security, education, IT, digital, space and high tech, culture, mobility, and people-to-people ties.”
The External Affairs Ministry highlighted that both sides acknowledged the significant progress made in the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. They expressed eagerness to conclude these negotiations promptly to establish a mutually beneficial FTA that would further cement economic ties. In addition to trade and technology, India and the UK have agreed to deepen their defence and security cooperation. This includes enhancing capacities to address growing threats from non-state actors and ensuring a stable and secure Indo-Pacific region.
During his visit, Foreign Secretary Lammy also held a meeting with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. This meeting further emphasized the commitment of both countries to address security concerns and work together on strategic issues.
