Japan Airlines (JAL), the country’s second-largest carrier, reported a major cyberattack early Thursday morning, severely disrupting both domestic and international flight operations. The attack, which began at 7:24 AM local time (2224 GMT), targeted the airline’s internal and external network systems, resulting in widespread communication and operational malfunctions.

In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), JAL confirmed the incident, saying: “We have been under cyberattack on our internal and external network devices, causing problems with the systems that communicate with external systems. We expect this to affect both domestic and international flights.” The airline issued an apology to affected passengers and assured that it was working to address the issue swiftly.

As of now, nine flights have been delayed, with the possibility of further disruptions, including cancellations. While JAL has not provided specific details about the extent of the impact, a spokesperson acknowledged that the situation remains fluid and additional delays are likely.

The incident underscores the increasing cybersecurity risks faced by Japan’s aviation sector, which relies heavily on interconnected digital systems for operations ranging from ticketing to baggage handling. In recent years, Japanese companies have faced an uptick in cyberattacks. For example, a 2022 breach at a Toyota supplier disrupted production across domestic plants for an entire day, and in June 2024, the video-sharing platform Niconico suspended its services following a large-scale cyberattack.

The aviation industry globally has also been vulnerable to such threats, with cyberattacks posing risks to sensitive data and essential services. While JAL has not disclosed details about the perpetrators or the specific nature of the attack, it has confirmed its collaboration with cybersecurity experts and authorities to investigate and resolve the issue.

Experts caution that such incidents highlight the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures in critical infrastructure sectors, including aviation. They warn that if not quickly addressed, such breaches could lead to significant operational disruptions or compromise sensitive passenger information.

Passengers are advised to monitor JAL’s official website and contact customer service for updates on flight schedules and delays. The airline has committed to providing real-time updates as more information becomes available.

Established in 1951, Japan Airlines is a cornerstone of the nation’s aviation industry, operating a fleet that serves over 90 destinations globally. The cyberattack comes as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by critical industries in an increasingly digitalised world. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
