AI voice cloning fraud involves the use of artificial intelligence to mimic the voice of a known person, often a relative or someone close to the victim. Fraudsters leverage this technology to create convincing audio messages, exploiting the familiarity of the voice to manipulate the victim into divulging sensitive information or making financial transactions
Imagine a scenario where the voice of your relatives, friends, kids, acquaintances, or even yours is being used to indulge in financial frauds. Sounds scary, right?
In a recent and distressing incident in Lucknow, a resident named Kartikeya found himself ensnared in the web of a cyberthug who employed artificial intelligence to impersonate the voice of a close relative. This alarming case sheds light on the growing trend of AI-powered scams, with fraudsters utilising voice cloning technology to carry out sophisticated and convincing deception.
Kartikeya, a resident of Vineet Khand, received a call from an unfamiliar number that, to his surprise, echoed the tone of his own uncle. The fraudster, armed with AI voice cloning capabilities, spun a tale of encountering technical difficulties with a UPI transaction intended for Kartikeya. Claiming to send Rs. 90,000, the imposter urgently requested Kartikeya to forward the money to a trusted contact. Deceived by the seemingly authentic call and manipulated bank updates, Kartikeya fell victim to the scam, transferring Rs. 45,500 to the fraudster’s designated account.
The Gomti Nagar police have taken cognizance of the incident, registering an FIR and actively investigating the case. This serves as a stark reminder of the evolving landscape of cybercrime and the increasing reliance on AI-powered tools by fraudsters.

Protecting Yourself from AI Voice Cloning Fraud
Exercise Caution with Urgent Financial Requests
Be skeptical of calls or messages requesting urgent financial assistance, even if the voice sounds familiar. Scammers often exploit a sense of urgency to catch victims off guard.
Verify Identity Independently
Before making any financial transactions, independently verify the identity of the person making the request. Use alternative communication channels, such as a known phone number or social media account, to confirm the legitimacy of the request.
Stay Informed and Vigilant
Stay abreast of the latest trends in cybercrime, particularly those involving AI technology. Being informed about potential threats enhances your ability to recognize and avoid falling victim to scams.
Report Suspicious Activity Promptly
If you suspect any fraudulent activity, report it to the authorities immediately. Timely reporting increases the chances of tracking down the perpetrators and preventing further scams.
