Rajnath Singh Discuss Regional Security With His U.S. Counterpart

During the dialogue, Singh and Austin exchanged views on various ongoing bilateral events, notably the February 2024 INDUS-X Summit in New Delhi

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh engaged in a  telephonic discussion with United States Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin on March 18. The conversation delved into a range of bilateral, regional security, and defence cooperation matters.

During the dialogue, Singh and Austin exchanged views on various ongoing bilateral events, notably the February 2024 INDUS-X Summit in New Delhi. They also touched upon the commencement of the bilateral Tri-Service exercise named ‘Tiger Triumph’ in India on the same day.

The efforts of the Indian Navy in combating piracy in the Indian Ocean region were duly recognised by the US Secretary of Defence.

Further, the two ministers deliberated on the implementation of the roadmap for India-US defense cooperation, which was finalised the previous year. They also addressed issues related to defence-industrial cooperation, such as the prospect of US naval ships being repaired at Indian shipyards.

The India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X), launched in June 2023, was highlighted as a significant initiative aimed at synchronising defence innovation endeavors in technology, systems, and products. This ecosystem facilitates collaboration between the US military Innovation Unit (DIU) and India’s Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX). Notably, efforts have been made to foster joint innovation challenges, conduct workshops, and facilitate meetings between investors and start-ups in the defense industry.

Over the past two decades, the relationship between the US and India has seen significant advancement, evolving into a comprehensive cooperative endeavor. Cooperation in the military and security domains has played a pivotal role in nurturing a broad-based global strategic alliance with increasing multi-sectoral engagement.

Although occasional areas of disagreement have arisen, both parties have demonstrated a commitment to addressing them cooperatively. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the US in June 2023 served as a catalyst, injecting fresh momentum and optimism into the relationship.
