In the year 2023, approximately 31% of the respondents indicated that their respective organisations had encountered cyber threats.

In October 2023, during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Genetec Inc. conducted a study involving over 5,500 physical security leaders from around the world. The study brought to light the fact that concerns about cybersecurity in the field of physical security are on the rise.

In the year 2023, approximately 31% of the respondents indicated that their respective organisations had encountered cyber threats. Interestingly, these threats seemed to be more prevalent in specific sectors. For instance, the intelligence and national security sector reported a significantly higher incidence of cyberattacks at 73%, and the banking and finance sector reported 46%, in contrast to the retail sector, where the figure stood at 21%.

For 36% of the respondents, cybersecurity vulnerabilities were noted as the foremost challenge facing their organisations in the year 2023. The healthcare sector, in particular, showed significant concern, with 43% of respondents highlighting cybersecurity as their primary concern. This concern is not surprising given the well-publicised cyberattacks on healthcare providers in recent years.

The study also indicated a positive trend, with 42% of the end-user respondents mentioning that their organisations are now actively deploying cybersecurity-related tools in their physical security setups. This marks a notable increase from the 27% reported in the previous year.

Mathieu Chevalier, principal security architect at Genetec Inc. ,commended this growing awareness of cybersecurity in the realm of physical security systems. He emphasised the significance of organisations selecting manufacturers that are committed to cybersecurity and provide tools to simplify the maintenance and updates of their systems. This proactive approach is essential in the face of escalating cyber threats in the modern world.

“It is reassuring to see growing awareness of the cybersecurity of physical security systems,” says Chevalier.

“As more organisations look to implement enhanced cybersecurity measures, they need to look for manufacturers who are committed to cybersecurity and building tools that help them streamline the maintenance and updates of their systems” he added.
