Tihar Jail Implements Strict Security Measures After Notorious Gangster's Murder
Since the tragic incident involving Tillu Tajpuria, each jail now has a dedicated QRT team to handle security challenges.
Following the recent killing of notorious gangster Tillu Tajpuria within the confines of Tihar Jail, the prison authorities have introduced a series of security measures to enhance inmate safety. These measures, developed through research and innovation, aim to prevent future conflicts and violence within the prison environment.

One significant change involves the establishment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs) in each prison. Comprising 6-8 security personnel drawn from various forces, including the jail staff, ITBP, and Tamil Nadu Police, these teams have undergone specialised anti-riot training. Regular drills are conducted within the jail premises to enhance their preparedness for potential disturbances.

Additionally, security personnel are now equipped with non-lethal tools such as pepper spray to manage situations where inmates engage in clashes or disruptive behaviour. This approach is designed to de-escalate conflicts without resorting to excessive force. Electric batons are also being used as a last resort to control violent individuals.

Since the tragic incident involving Tillu Tajpuria, each jail now has a dedicated QRT team to handle security challenges. The team consists of personnel from the jail staff, ITBP, Tamil Nadu Police, and other paramilitary forces, all of whom have received anti-riot training. Regular drills conducted within the jail further enhance their readiness.

Simultaneously, Tihar Jail authorities have confiscated over 1400 mobile phones in the past 13 months. However, a significant challenge remains as the jammers installed in Delhi jails operate on 3G and 4G networks, rendering them ineffective against the emerging 5G networks. To address this issue, the jail administration is in the process of exploring new technologies that support 5G jamming capabilities.

According to the Tihar Jail Administration, a total of 1430 mobile phones and SIM cards have been recovered in the last 13 months. The recovery breakdown includes 82 from jail number 1,33 from jail number 2, 204 from jail number 3, 262 from jail number 4, 269 from jail number 7, and varying numbers from other jails. The recovery efforts extend beyond mobile phones, as a considerable number of sharp weapons have also been confiscated.

DG Tihar Sanjay Beniwal emphasised the routine checking campaigns conducted by their teams to ensure that prisoners do not possess prohibited items. Any discoveries, such as mobile phones or sharp weapons, are promptly confiscated, and appropriate actions are taken against the responsible individuals.
