Sullivan is also set to meet with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval
U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is visiting India, marking the first visit by a senior American official since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government secured a third consecutive term. Sullivan’s trip coincides with the second meeting of the initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), underscoring the importance of tech collaboration between the two nations.
Originally slated for February, Sullivan’s visit was delayed due to urgent matters in the US. The annual review meeting has now been rescheduled for June 17-18. Sullivan is accompanied by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and other senior officials. During the visit, he will meet with Prime Minister Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Sullivan is also set to meet with his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval. After these discussions, both countries are expected to release a joint statement highlighting the progress and significance of the iCET mechanism. Talks will also cover the situation in West Asia.
Speaking to reporters at the Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, Sullivan confirmed his travel plans to India for the iCET meeting. The visit follows a phone call on June 6 between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Modi, where Biden congratulated Modi on his electoral victory and discussed Sullivan’s upcoming visit.
A White House statement mentioned, “President Joe Biden spoke today with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India to congratulate him and the National Democratic Alliance on their historic victory in India’s general election.”
The leaders emphasized their commitment to strengthening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership. “The two leaders emphasized their commitment to deepening the US-India Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership and to advancing their shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” the statement added.
They also discussed Sullivan’s visit to engage the new government on shared US-India priorities, including the trusted strategic technology partnership.
