Amid ongoing political debates in Delhi over the presence of illegal immigrants, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) informed Parliament on Tuesday that nearly 75 per cent of the India-Bangladesh border has been fenced. The ministry acknowledged challenges in certain areas where fencing is not feasible but confirmed that efforts to secure the border are continuing.

The India-Bangladesh border spans 4,096.7 kilometres, of which 3,232.2 kilometres have been fenced, according to the ministry’s statement. “Construction of fencing is an important security measure for securing the border. Fencing helps in ensuring a crime-free border by effectively addressing the challenges of cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, movement of criminals, and trafficking,” the MHA said.

Ongoing Challenges & Security Measures

Despite the progress, around 864.5 kilometres remain unfenced, including 174.5 kilometres classified as “non-feasible gaps.” These gaps are attributed to challenges such as land acquisition issues, objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), limited working seasons, and difficult terrain including marshy land and landslide-prone areas.

To address security concerns, India has reiterated its commitment to following all protocols and agreements with Bangladesh, including those between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The MHA noted that Bangladesh has been kept informed about ongoing security measures, including fencing projects.

Focus On Security & Cooperation

The MHA underscored the importance of the fence in curbing illegal activities along the border, stating that it serves as a crucial tool in maintaining order and preventing cross-border crime.

While political debates over border security and illegal immigration persist, the government’s efforts to secure the border through continued cooperation with Bangladesh and infrastructural upgrades signal a determined approach towards safeguarding India’s eastern frontier.
