Investigators are exploring a wide range of sabotage possibilities following the crash of Air India Flight AI-171, which went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on 12 June, killing 241 of the 242 people onboard. The crash marked the first fatal accident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner and has triggered a multi-agency probe involving top intelligence, aviation, and security bodies.
Officials say the focus is on ruling out every conceivable form of interference, with a strategy of “prevention through elimination” guiding the ongoing forensic inquiry. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), India’s top aviation crash body, is leading the investigation, supported by intelligence and security agencies. The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder—collectively known as the black box—have been recovered and sent to Delhi for analysis. Investigators say the formal probe will deepen once the black box data is decoded.
Sources told that the rare occurrence of dual engine failure on the Dreamliner raised immediate concerns. Investigators are treating the incident as highly unusual and are assessing various lines of inquiry to determine whether foul play may have contributed.

Cyber-physical sabotage is another avenue under investigation. Intelligence officials are concerned that the 787’s complex digital systems could have been targeted. Forensic cyber audits are being conducted on the aircraft’s engine control units, flight management systems, and ground terminals to detect potential malware or spoofed commands.
The investigation also includes scrutiny of airport security. Access logs, biometric data, and CCTV footage from the pre-flight period are being reviewed for evidence of unauthorised access or compromised personnel.
Further complicating the investigation is the possibility of a targeted attack based on passenger or cargo profiles. Intelligence sources suggest that manifests are being examined to identify individuals with political, intelligence, or legal sensitivities, raising the possibility of a strategic or symbolic motive behind the crash.
Foreign involvement is also being considered. Agencies are not ruling out the possibility of a hostile external actor or non-state proxy targeting the aircraft in a show of capability or retaliation.
Air traffic control (ATC) interference is another angle, with agencies probing potential electronic warfare tactics such as GPS spoofing or signal jamming that could have compromised flight safety.
“The AAIB has begun a full investigation into it,” Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said, as quoted by *NDTV*. “It is being probed from all angles, including any possible sabotage. The CCTV footage is being reviewed and several agencies are working on it.”
As investigators work through a complex web of potential causes, the tragedy has raised serious questions about aviation security, cyber vulnerability, and airport protocols in one of India’s most high-profile aviation disasters in recent years.
