Airbnb Bans Security Cameras Inside All Properties

Under the new policy, hosts will be required to disclose the presence and locations of any outdoor security cameras

Airbnb has recently announced significant changes to its policy regarding security cameras within guest homes, with a focus on prioritising privacy for its users. Previously, the platform allowed indoor security cameras in common areas like hallways and living rooms, provided they were clearly visible and disclosed in property listings.

However, reports came of guests discovering hidden cameras in Airbnb lodgings, particularly in areas where privacy is expected. In response to these concerns, Airbnb has decided to implement a global ban on indoor security cameras in all listings, effective April 30. This decision is part of the company’s broader efforts to streamline its policies on security devices and uphold the privacy of its community members.

Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, emphasised the importance of providing clear guidelines for users. Despite the ban on indoor security cameras, doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors will still be permitted for home security purposes and to identify unauthorized gatherings.

Under the new policy, hosts will be required to disclose the presence and locations of any outdoor security cameras. However, these cameras cannot monitor sensitive areas such as outdoor showers or saunas. This update reflects Airbnb’s commitment to enhancing transparency and safeguarding the privacy of its guests and hosts alike, ensuring a more secure and comfortable experience for all involved.
