In a significant security upgrade, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will replace the police forces of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh at the Bhakra and Nangal dams. Sources confirmed that at least 300 CISF personnel will be deployed to guard both dams, which are located 35 kilometres apart. While the Bhakra Dam is currently under the protection of Punjab Police, the Nangal Dam is secured by Himachal Pradesh Police. This will mark the fourth project in the region to come under CISF protection.

According to sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved the move, with the deployment expected to commence from April. The decision comes amid concerns over potential security threats and the need to enhance security protocols. The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), which oversees the dams, has been coordinating with authorities to facilitate the transition. Last year, the CISF also assumed responsibility for the security of the Beas-Sutlej Link from Himachal Pradesh Police.
Intelligence agencies have previously flagged security threats to the Bhakra Dam, particularly regarding the risk of sabotage. While experts consider the dam’s structure to be highly resilient, any attack on peripheral infrastructure, powerhouses, or transmission systems could have serious implications.
Former Punjab DGP Shashikant welcomed the decision, highlighting the strategic significance of the dams. “Local police were guarding both vital installations. If there was a security threat and something untoward happened, the water flow could be affected, spreading across regions and even toward Pakistan. This move is a step in the right direction,” he said.
The CISF, with its expertise in securing critical infrastructure, is expected to strengthen the security apparatus of the dams, ensuring robust protection against potential threats. The deployment underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding key national assets.
