Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has showcased the Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) Warrior, an advanced unmanned wingman drone demonstrator, at Aero India 2025. The unveiling of a full-scale prototype marks a significant step in India’s indigenous defence capabilities and highlights the future of manned-unmanned teaming in aerial combat.

The CATS Warrior is designed to operate alongside fighter jets like the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, acting as a “loyal wingman.” It can execute multiple roles, including reconnaissance, engaging enemy fire, and striking targets. The drone is controlled by a mothership aircraft and is capable of returning to base after missions. In high-risk scenarios, it can be directed to crash into critical targets, ensuring the safety of manned aircraft.

Equipped with stealth features, internal weapon bays, and advanced avionics, the CATS Warrior is comparable to platforms like the Boeing Ghost Bat and other loyal wingman drones. It can operate up to 700 kilometres deep into enemy territory, providing a crucial strategic advantage.

Step Towards Future Warfare

Developed by HAL’s Aircraft Research and Design Centre (ARDC) in collaboration with New Space Research and Technologies (NRT), the CATS Warrior is part of HAL’s broader CATS programme. This initiative aims to integrate manned and unmanned platforms to create a seamless combat force, enhancing mission effectiveness while reducing risks to pilots.

In January 2025, HAL achieved a milestone by successfully conducting the engine ground run of a full-scale demonstrator, indicating steady progress in the project.

Key Features & Capabilities

The CATS Warrior features a composite structure designed for low observability, with a single serpentine air intake atop its fuselage leading to twin engines. This design enhances aerodynamic efficiency while minimising radar detection.

It is equipped with advanced avionics, including an electro-optic/infrared payload, active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, and electronic warfare capabilities for jamming enemy communications. The drone is built for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and combat missions.

For weaponry, the CATS Warrior can carry two short-range or beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles externally and two DRDO Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAAW) internally, making it versatile in offensive operations.

The introduction of the CATS Warrior represents a shift in India’s approach to aerial combat, with a focus on integrating autonomous systems to enhance operational capabilities. As unmanned warfare becomes a crucial component of modern military strategy, this development aligns India with global advancements in drone technology.
