Efforts are underway to tackle concerns regarding unauthorised entry, known as tailgating, at airports through the implementation of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) within the Digi Yatra system, according to officials. The issue of tailgating, flagged by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), is being addressed by stakeholders, including the Digi Yatra Foundation, through the use of FRT at e-gates, providing a contactless and seamless entry experience.
In a recent interview, Digi Yatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi emphasised the importance of prioritising safety and security for flyers. Khadakbhavi mentioned that discussions with various stakeholders are underway to find solutions to the issue of tailgating. He highlighted the use of technology to swiftly close gates to prevent unauthorised entry, while ensuring passenger safety.
To utilise Digi Yatra services, passengers need to register their credentials on the Digi Yatra app, undergo Aadhaar-based authentication, and capture their image. The app then generates a boarding pass, which is scanned at the e-gate. Facial recognition technology is employed to verify passenger identity before granting access to the airport. However, passengers are still required to check in at the security desk before boarding their flight.
Data collected through Digi Yatra is encrypted and stored securely on individual phones, according to the CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, ensuring passenger privacy and control over their information.
Currently operational at 14 airports, Digi Yatra is set to expand to an additional 14 airports by the end of the month. With approximately 5 million users, the foundation is committed to enhancing the user experience and facilitating passenger journeys.
