Senior IPS officer Nalin Prabhat has ascended to the position of chief of the National Security Guard (NSG), the nation’s revered counter-terrorism force, as per a directive from the Personnel Ministry.
Mr. Prabhat, a seasoned 1992 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, currently occupies the role of Additional Director General within the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The appointment, duly sanctioned by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), delineates his responsibilities as the Director General of NSG until August 31, 2028, coinciding with his slated superannuation date, according to the official decree.
The NSG, commonly known as the “black cats,” stands as a federal contingency force forged in 1984 to counter terrorism and manage critical scenarios with precision. Prior to Mr. Prabhat’s accession, the interim oversight of NSG rested with Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) chief Daljit Singh Chawdhary.
In tandem with Mr. Prabhat’s appointment, the ACC has also greenlit Sapna Tewari’s elevation to the role of Special Director within the Intelligence Bureau (IB). Ms. Tewari, also a member of the 1992 batch IPS cadre hailing from Odisha, currently fulfills the position of Additional Director within the IB. Her tenure as Special Director, IB, spans a period of two years from assuming office or until her scheduled superannuation date on April 30, 2026, as delineated by the official proclamation.
