A retired United States lieutenant general has raised concerns over Elon Musk’s potential national security risks due to his business dealings and reported interactions with foreign leaders. The tech billionaire, who heads Tesla and SpaceX, has played a prominent role in President-elect Donald Trump’s transition, drawing scrutiny over his international connections.

Retired Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, speaking on Sunday, highlighted Musk’s extensive business interests in China and his reported communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Honoré warned that these associations could pose risks to US national security, particularly given Musk’s involvement with SpaceX, a key player in the American space programme.

The concerns intensified after a Wall Street Journal report in October revealed Musk had maintained regular contact with Putin since late 2022. The report prompted two Democratic senators to call for a federal investigation into Musk’s relationship with SpaceX contracts, which are closely linked to sensitive government projects.

“If the federal investigations demonstrate deep connections to China and Russia, the federal government should consider revoking Mr Musk’s security clearance,” said Honoré. He also emphasised the need to evaluate alternative providers for launch services, stating, “It should already be thinking about using alternatives to SpaceX’s launch services.”

Tesla’s deep-rooted presence in China, including a significant portion of its manufacturing and sales operations, has also been a focal point of criticism. Experts have pointed out that Chinese authorities could potentially leverage Musk’s business dependencies for strategic influence.

Musk’s international engagements have sparked debate in Washington over whether figures with such global business ties should hold access to sensitive government information or influence policymaking decisions.

While the investigation into Musk’s connections remains in its early stages, the situation has underscored broader concerns about the intersection of global business interests and national security. For now, Musk’s pivotal role in both the tech world and government collaborations continues to draw attention from policymakers and analysts alike.
