The Airport Authority explained that the increase in the security fee will help maintain the high standards of security at the airport
Starting next year, passengers departing from Hong Kong International Airport will see an additional HK$10 added to their security fees. The Airport Authority has announced that the Passenger Security Charge, which is collected by airlines on behalf of the Airport Authority, will be raised from the current HK$55 to HK$65 effective January 1.
This fee hike aims to support the airport’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its security facilities and systems. The Airport Authority has also indicated that, depending on the growth and demand in passenger traffic, the fee could rise further to HK$75 in phases starting in 2027. The last adjustment to the charge was in 2021, when it was increased from HK$50 to HK$55.
It’s important to note that tickets issued before January 1, 2025, will not be subject to the new fee, even if the travel date is after this cutoff. This measure ensures that passengers who have already booked their tickets will not face unexpected additional costs.
The Airport Authority explained that the increase in the security fee will help maintain the high standards of security at the airport. The additional funds will be used for several significant upgrades. These include the installation of a new smart passenger security screening system, the replacement of the hold baggage screening system, and the expansion of security coverage to related areas under the new Three-runway System.
In line with the “user pays, cost recovery” principle stipulated in the Hong Kong Aviation Security Programme, these adjustments are designed to recover the additional costs of the enhanced security measures and systems that will be implemented at the airport in the coming years. The Authority emphasized that these changes are necessary to ensure that the airport can continue to provide a secure environment for all passengers.
The planned upgrades are part of a broader effort to enhance the overall security infrastructure at Hong Kong International Airport. By investing in new technologies and systems, the Airport Authority aims to keep pace with evolving security challenges and maintain its reputation as a safe and reliable hub for international travel.
As passenger numbers continue to grow and the demand for air travel increases, these measures will help ensure that the airport can manage security effectively and efficiently. The additional revenue from the increased security fee will play a crucial role in funding these essential improvements, ultimately benefiting all passengers who travel through Hong Kong International Airport.
