Mumbai police have stepped up security for comedian and television host Kapil Sharma following two separate shooting incidents this month at his recently opened café in Surrey, Canada. Officials confirmed that armed personnel have been deployed near Sharma’s Mumbai residence and workplace after threats purportedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
The first shooting occurred in early August when multiple rounds were fired at the café’s glass façade in the early hours. Less than two weeks later, another incident was reported in which at least 25 gunshots were heard. In the latest case, a threatening audio clip was also circulated alongside the footage of the attack. In the recording, a voice can be heard saying: “We had called the target, but he didn’t hear the ring… the next action will be taken soon in Mumbai.”
Two criminal groups, one led by Gurpreet Singh alias Goldy Dhillon and the other by Bishnoi, claimed responsibility on social media. Both have been linked to previous extortion attempts and violent intimidation of celebrities. Though no injuries were reported in either incident, investigators believe the attacks were intended as a public show of force.
Police sources say Sharma has not received any direct communication from the gangs but the threats are being treated as credible. Surrey police are coordinating with Indian authorities to trace the suspects and determine whether the incidents are linked to an ongoing feud between Canada-based organised crime networks.
The Bishnoi gang, which has been active across several Indian states, has in recent years expanded its activities internationally, often using social media to issue public warnings. The group has been accused of targeting high-profile figures in Bollywood and the Punjabi entertainment industry as part of its extortion operations.
While Sharma has not publicly commented on the incidents, industry colleagues have expressed concern over the growing trend of overseas-based gangs targeting Indian celebrities. Officials in Mumbai say the enhanced security measures will remain in place until the threat is assessed as minimal.
