An investigation revealed several serious breaches of state regulations
Unifi Security LLC, a private security company, has agreed to pay a record fine of USD 132,440 to the state of Minnesota for operating without a valid licence. The Minnesota Board of Private Detectives and Protective Agent Services announced the settlement on Friday, marking what officials believe to be one of the largest penalties ever issued for a licensing violation in the state.
According to the board, Unifi failed to file the necessary paperwork to renew its licence, allowing it to lapse. Despite the lapse, the company continued to operate illegally, providing private security services across the state.
An investigation revealed several serious breaches of state regulations. These included not only operating without a licence but also failing to perform required background checks on multiple prospective employees and not delivering mandatory training to current staff.
As part of the settlement, Unifi waived its right to contest the case in a formal hearing and agreed to pay the fine. The revocation of its licence was stayed, meaning the company can continue operations provided it complies with all legal and regulatory requirements moving forward.
Board Chair Rick Hodsdon acknowledged the company’s cooperation but stressed the importance of maintaining public trust and legal compliance in the private security sector. “While we very much appreciate the willingness of Unifi to admit its mistakes and take this corrective action, considering the vital role that private security plays in modern public safety, it is critical that all license holders of all sizes comply with our legal requirements,” he said in a statement.
The case serves as a strong reminder to private security firms operating in Minnesota of the need for strict adherence to licensing rules and employment protocols. The board has indicated it will continue monitoring compliance to ensure that public safety standards are upheld.
