The Mumbai Police has imposed a temporary ban on the use of drones, remote-controlled microlight aircraft, paragliders, and hot air balloons in the city, citing potential security threats from anti-social and terrorist elements. The order is aimed at averting any sabotage or attack on VVIPs and public infrastructure.

The prohibition, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, will remain in effect from April 4 to May 5. Police officials confirmed that the directive covers the entire Mumbai Police Commissionerate jurisdiction.

According to the official notification, intelligence inputs have indicated that aerial devices could be misused to carry out attacks, posing a serious threat to public safety. “Terrorists and anti-social elements may use these flying objects to target VVIPs, endanger public lives, and cause damage to public property,” the order states.

The order notes that, to prevent such threats and maintain law and order, restrictions on the use of these flying objects are necessary. It clarifies that exceptions will be made only for aerial surveillance conducted by the police or for those who obtain explicit permission from the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).

“Certain restrictions need to be put on the activities of such elements in the city to prevent probable sabotages through flying objects, for which some preventive measures are required to be taken,” the directive adds.

Violators of the order will face action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to disobedience of a lawful order issued by a public servant.

This move comes at a time when authorities across the country are on heightened alert due to increased security concerns around VVIP movements and major public events. The use of unmanned aerial vehicles in past incidents has raised alarms globally, prompting cities to enforce similar temporary restrictions.

Residents and operators of aerial equipment are advised to strictly adhere to the order and seek necessary permissions if their activity falls under an essential category.
