Odisha Police have deployed two bulletproof armoured vehicles equipped with roof-mounted light machine guns in a bid to strengthen counter-terrorism operations and improve emergency response capabilities.
One vehicle has been stationed in Bhubaneswar, the state’s administrative hub, while the second has been sent to Puri ahead of the upcoming Rath Yatra. Both are designed to withstand heavy gunfire and explosives.
Operated by Special Tactical Unit (STU) commandos trained in urban warfare, the vehicles can carry up to six personnel. Features include ballistic carpets, reinforced armour, multiple firing ports and rear-mounted cameras to improve situational awareness.
Officials said the vehicles will support patrolling, convoy protection, hostage rescue and rapid response in high-risk zones. Police sources described the move as a step forward in the state’s efforts to address evolving security threats and ensure public safety.
