A meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence was recently held in Chennai to assess the Indian Coast Guard’s (ICG) role in safeguarding India’s vast maritime boundaries. The gathering, chaired by MP Radha Mohan Singh, included senior officials from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and key representatives from the ICG, an official release stated.
Director General S. Paramesh, the head of the Indian Coast Guard, provided an in-depth presentation on the force’s operational readiness, strategic initiatives, and the measures being taken to address coastal security challenges. The discussion highlighted the ICG’s ongoing efforts to protect India’s maritime interests, improve inter-agency coordination, and strengthen response mechanisms for maritime safety and security.
DG Paramesh outlined the Coast Guard’s capabilities, detailing the extensive use of advanced surveillance systems, a modernised fleet of vessels, and specialised response units designed to handle complex maritime threats. He also elaborated on the ICG’s critical role in combating illegal activities such as smuggling, human trafficking, and unauthorised fishing, which pose significant challenges to coastal security.
