President Droupadi Murmu Praises Indian Navy At Navy Day Celebrations In Puri

The President praised the Navy’s efforts in promoting gender equality, particularly its pioneering role in inducting women Agniveers

Invoking the blessings of Varuna, the God of the Ocean, President Droupadi Murmu expressed confidence in the Indian Navy’s ability to safeguard India’s maritime security. Speaking at the Navy Day celebrations held at the Blue Flag Beach in Puri, Odisha, she highlighted the Navy’s pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s development goals for a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

“I am confident that the Indian Navy will continue to ensure maritime security, essential for Viksit Bharat by 2047,” the President said, acknowledging the Navy’s growing strength and its focus on becoming an ‘Atmanirbhar’ (self-reliant) force. She noted that 63 ships are currently being built in India, underscoring the Navy’s commitment to indigenous innovation.

The President praised the Navy’s efforts in promoting gender equality, particularly its pioneering role in inducting women Agniveers. She commended Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa, who are circumnavigating the globe aboard INSV Tarini as part of the ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama II.’ “Their achievements provide the best example of this new paradigm,” Murmu added.

Navy Day commemorates India’s strategic victory during the 1971 war with Pakistan and honours the sacrifices of naval personnel. Murmu lauded the Navy’s role in that conflict and its rich maritime heritage, which spans over 5,000 years.

The event marked the first Navy Day celebration on India’s eastern coast and featured a spectacular operational demonstration by the Indian Navy. Thousands of spectators witnessed displays of maritime prowess, including a ground attack manoeuvre by Hawk AJTs in an arrowhead formation. The Marine Commandos (MARCOS) showcased their combat expertise with a dramatic hostage rescue operation, while Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) and Chetak helicopters added dynamic aerial displays.

Women cadets performed the traditional Horn Pipe Dance, and advanced fighter jets like the MIG-29K and Hawk aircraft demonstrated aerial supremacy. The event also paid tribute to Odisha’s historical maritime legacy.

A total of 15 warships, 37 aircraft, and a submarine participated in the demonstrations, which included Combat Free Falls, slithering operations by MARCOS, submarine manoeuvres, and rocket firing by warships.

The celebrations concluded with a Beating Retreat Ceremony by the Eastern Naval Command Band, followed by a Continuity Drill. A spectacular drone and laser show illuminated the night sky, providing a fitting finale to the action-packed event.
