Remembering Jaspal Singh Sawhney: Pioneer Of Cybersecurity Leadership

Jaspal Singh Sawhney’s life reminds us that leadership in cybersecurity is not just about defending systems, but also about inspiring people

Jaspal Singh Sawhney, a widely respected figure in the field of digital security, leaves behind a legacy that spans continents, sectors and decades. His contributions—particularly in the financial services and telecom domains—played a significant role in shaping the cybersecurity landscape in India and globally.

With over 20 years of leadership experience, Sawhney brought clarity and depth to complex risk management challenges. Since 2019, he served as the Global Chief Information Security and Privacy Officer at Tata Communications, where he led digital trust and enterprise-wide risk mitigation strategies during a period of rapid digital transformation.

His earlier career at Deutsche Bank, lasting nearly 19 years, was equally remarkable. Rising from a global tech production role to become the Country CISO for India, Sawhney’s tenure was marked by strategic foresight, technical expertise and a calm yet effective leadership style that won the trust of colleagues and stakeholders alike.

Listener, Mentor & Advocate

Unlike many in senior cybersecurity roles who command attention with forceful presence, Sawhney influenced through quiet conviction. Colleagues often recall his preference for listening over lecturing, mentoring over managing. His humility and approachability earned him not just professional admiration but personal loyalty.

“Jaspal was humble to the core,” noted one long-time associate. “He never sought headlines, but his advice was consistently sought by boards, regulators, and government working groups.” A strong advocate for privacy-first policies, he also contributed to wider conversations on digital resilience and risk governance, particularly in the financial services ecosystem.

Journey Built On Knowledge & Integrity

An alumnus of Delhi University with a degree in Computer Science, and a postgraduate in Marketing and Finance from the Delhi Productivity Council, Sawhney combined technical depth with business insight—an increasingly rare combination in today’s security environment.

He was not only a leader in boardrooms and security operations centres, but also a believer in ethical leadership. His quiet dedication to professional integrity and service-oriented thinking left a lasting mark on peers and mentees alike.

Since news of his passing, tributes have poured in across professional platforms like LinkedIn. Many of these messages speak not just of his cybersecurity acumen but of his generosity, kindness and character.

Lasting Legacy

Jaspal Singh Sawhney’s life reminds us that leadership in cybersecurity is not just about defending systems, but also about inspiring people, building trust, and navigating risk with responsibility. Though he preferred to remain out of the spotlight, his impact was deeply felt across the industry.

In his passing, the community has lost more than a CISO—it has lost a teacher, guide and friend.

May his soul rest in peace.
