Rs 2.5 crore initiative brings hundreds of cameras to monitor key junctions, boosting security and night-time vigilance
In a significant step to enhance public safety, the Udupi district police, in cooperation with the Udupi District Chamber of Commerce, have launched a project to install 601 CCTV cameras across 207 strategic junctions and zones—an initiative estimated to cost Rs 2.5 crore. This comprehensive surveillance network is aimed at curbing crime and improving citizen protection, with feeds monitored around the clock from local police stations and the district control room.
The rollout features two tiers of camera coverage. The first phase equips 10 Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras across border points and areas prone to communal tensions—such as Mala, Hosmar, Sacheripete, Sanur, Someshwara, Hosangadi, Dali, Mel Gangolli, Malpe Beach, and the city bus stand. Simultaneously, 10 high-definition cameras will be deployed at major urban intersections like Kalsanka, Karavali Junction, Indrali Bridge, Santhekatte, the service bus stand, the old KSRTC bus stand, M Kodi Junction, Kandlur Market, Baradi, and Naravi.
In tandem with the camera deployment, the district has expanded its “Drishti Project”—a night-time patrolling scheme launched under the broader “Mane Mane Beti” outreach initiative. Security guards are assigned to patrol areas between 10 pm and 6 am, responding to reported threats and safeguarding vulnerable groups including women, senior citizens, and lone residents. This scheme currently extends across 12 locations and will soon expand to 21 more across the district.
The project’s importance lies in its layered approach to security. With 601 cameras spread across critical junctions and sensitive areas, the system offers wide coverage and continuous monitoring, enhancing both deterrence and response times. The use of ANPR technology speeds up vehicle identification during investigations, while high-definition cameras improve visual clarity for more accurate monitoring. Around-the-clock surveillance from control rooms ensures that alerts can be acted upon swiftly, while the integration of the “Drishti Project” night patrols adds a human element to complement the technology. This combination of advanced systems and on-ground vigilance reflects a community-focused strategy aimed at creating safer public spaces and reducing crime.
