UP Police To Intensify Vigilance At Religious Gatherings To Curb Criminal Activity

The Special Task Force findings have highlighted a pattern where offenders use religious gatherings as a safe haven after committing crimes

The Uttar Pradesh Police have been directed to enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering at religious events across the state to prevent criminals from using such gatherings as a cover to evade law enforcement. The directive, issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, instructs senior officials to strengthen monitoring efforts and ensure that law and order are maintained during these events.

According to an official statement, the directive has been sent to all police commissioners, additional directors general, regional inspectors general, deputy inspectors general, and district superintendents. The move follows reports from the Special Task Force (STF) suggesting that criminals have been exploiting religious congregations to avoid arrest. In several instances, hardened criminals have taken refuge at such events, making it difficult for law enforcement to track them down.

Criminals Exploiting Religious Gatherings

The Special Task Force findings have highlighted a pattern where offenders use religious gatherings as a safe haven after committing crimes. These events, often attended by thousands from various regions, provide a convenient cover for individuals looking to evade capture.

DGP Kumar emphasised the urgency of tightening security measures, especially after a recent case in which a police inspector lost his life during an encounter with a criminal in Shamli district.

“Sunil Kumar, a police inspector, was martyred during a recent encounter with a criminal in Shamli district. Investigations later revealed that the accused had used religious congregations to evade law enforcement,” the DGP stated.

To counter this growing concern, the police have been instructed to closely monitor individuals travelling from different districts and states to attend religious events. The directive mandates increased scrutiny of attendees, ensuring that no one with a criminal background goes undetected.

Strengthening Intelligence & Coordination

To bolster security, district intelligence units and social media monitoring cells will play a crucial role in tracking suspicious activities. Local police units have been asked to coordinate closely and share real-time information to identify potential threats. The DGP stressed that authorities must work in tandem with event organisers to collect detailed records of attendees.

“Local police units must coordinate closely to identify any suspicious persons,” Kumar said, underlining the need for proactive engagement with stakeholders. He further instructed that a register of attendees should be maintained, capturing essential details such as valid identification, including Aadhaar numbers.

Regular Inspections & Background Checks

As part of the directive, law enforcement agencies will conduct monthly inspections to verify the backgrounds of individuals attending religious gatherings. These checks aim to ensure that such events are not exploited by criminals seeking shelter. The police have been asked to enforce these measures strictly, balancing the need for security with the public’s right to religious expression.

DGP Kumar reassured that while these measures are necessary for maintaining law and order, they will be implemented without causing inconvenience to genuine attendees.

By tightening surveillance, collaborating with organisers, and leveraging intelligence networks, the Uttar Pradesh Police aim to prevent criminals from misusing religious events as a shield from justice. The enhanced security measures are expected to create a safer environment while upholding the sanctity of religious gatherings across the state.
