With the commencement of the Kanwar Yatra, a significant pilgrimage in Hindu tradition, the Delhi Police has implemented extensive safety and security measures to ensure a smooth and safe journey for the devotees. The annual Kanwar Yatra began on July 22, marking the first day of Sawan, a sacred month dedicated to Lord Shiva, and will continue until August 2, 2024.
Security Preparations & Measures
Detailing the preparedness for the Kanwar Yatra, DCP North East Delhi Joy Tirkey highlighted the extensive efforts made to ensure the safety of the pilgrims. He stated, “We have issued Do’s and Don’ts for the Kanwar Shivirs, arranged firefighting equipment, and set up first aid facilities and Ganga Jal. Around 1,100 personnel have been deployed.”
Tirkey further emphasised the thorough security arrangements, saying, “All the preparations have been made for the Kanwar Yatra. Safety and security measures have been taken. CCTV cameras will be installed, and several other measures have been taken.” These steps are part of a broader effort to maintain order and ensure the well-being of the participants during the pilgrimage.
In anticipation of the large crowds, the Delhi Police also released a traffic advisory to inform the public about the arrangements for the Kanwar Yatra. According to the advisory, the number of Kanwariyas expected to participate this year is estimated to be between 15 to 20 lakhs.

Significance Of Kanwar Yatra & Sawan
The Kanwar Yatra is a deeply spiritual journey undertaken by devotees during the month of Sawan. The pilgrimage involves collecting holy water from the Ganges River and offering it to Lord Shiva at various temples across the country. This year, the Yatra began on July 22, coinciding with the first Monday of Sawan, known as Shravan Somvar, which is considered highly auspicious.
Devotees from all over India embarked on their journey, visiting prominent temples such as the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain, the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, the Kali Paltan temple in Meerut, and the Jharkhandi Mahadev Temple in Gorakhpur, to offer their prayers and seek blessings. Many devotees also took a holy dip in the Ganga to mark the first Monday of Sawan.
Haridwar, a major pilgrimage destination, witnessed a significant influx of pilgrims, prompting enhanced security arrangements. The area has been strategically divided into 14 superzones, 35 zones, and 132 sectors to ensure effective crowd management and safety measures.
Cultural & Mythological Significance
Sawan is a sacred month in Hindu mythology, symbolizing a period of worship, fasting, and pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, the deity of destruction and transformation. It holds a special place in the hearts of devotees as the time when Lord Shiva is believed to have consumed poison during the legendary churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), saving the universe from its toxic effects.
During this month, devotees observe fasting and offer prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. The cooling rains of Sawan are seen as a symbol of Shiva’s compassion and benevolence, bringing relief and renewal to the earth.
