Schneider Electric, a prominent name in energy management and automation, has recently fallen victim to a cyberattack. Sources familiar with the incident reveal that the company’s Sustainability Business division was targeted by the Cactus ransomware on January 17th. This attack has caused disruptions to Schneider Electric’s Resource Advisor cloud platform, impacting its operations.

Reports indicate that terabytes of corporate data were exposed during the breach. The hackers are now blackmailing the company for this stolen information to extort the company, threatening to expose it unless a ransom is paid. While the nature of the data stolen remains undisclosed, it is concerning as the Sustainability Business division offers consulting services to enterprise clients, focusing on renewable energy solutions and navigating climate regulatory complexities.

Clients of Schneider Electric’s Sustainability Business division, including notable names like Allegiant Travel Company, Clorox, DHL, DuPont, Hilton, Lexmark, PepsiCo, and Walmart, may be affected by this breach. The stolen data potentially includes sensitive details about customers’ power usage, industrial control systems, and compliance with environmental regulations.

Schneider Electric has confirmed the cyberattack, stating that the breach was limited to the Sustainability Business division and did not impact other areas of the company. However, the company has not disclosed whether it intends to meet the ransom demands. If left unaddressed, there’s a risk of the ransomware gang leaking the compromised data, as observed in previous incidents.
