In a statement, the Railway Ministry said the move underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to gender inclusivity, women’s empowerment, and enhanced security
Women personnel of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) will now be equipped with chilli spray cans alongside their firearms, adding a non-lethal deterrent to their security arsenal. The initiative, launched by Indian Railways on International Women’s Day (March 8), aims to enhance safety, particularly for female passengers traveling alone or with children.
In a statement, the Railway Ministry said the move underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to gender inclusivity, women’s empowerment, and enhanced security. The chilli spray will allow women RPF officers to deter threats, prevent harassment, and handle emergencies, especially in isolated railway stations, moving trains, and remote locations.
Strengthening Security For Women Passengers
RPF Director General Manoj Yadav highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of empowering women and ensuring safer public spaces.
“Our women RPF personnel are symbols of strength, care, and resilience. By equipping them with chilli spray, we are enhancing their confidence and operational capability while reinforcing our commitment to passenger safety, especially for women,” Yadav said.
Indian Railways has been increasing the representation of women in the RPF, making it the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) with the highest proportion of female personnel—9 per cent. Many of them serve in ‘Meri Saheli’ teams, which focus on ensuring the safe travel of female passengers. Currently, over 250 ‘Meri Saheli’ teams interact with around 12,900 female passengers daily, offering security and assistance.
Women RPF Personnel Go Beyond Security
Beyond policing, women RPF officers often provide critical assistance to passengers in distress. Under ‘Operation Matrishakti’, they have helped 174 women give birth on trains in 2024 alone, ensuring privacy, dignity, and medical aid.
During large gatherings such as the Mahakumbh, women RPF officers have played a crucial role in assisting female pilgrims. The addition of chilli spray is expected to further improve their ability to safeguard passengers, reinforcing Indian Railways’ commitment to security and passenger welfare.
