Himachal Jails To Get IP-Based Surveillance For Enhanced Security

To implement this, the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services recently invited e-tenders for the supply, design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the surveillance systems at these locations

In a move to bolster security and surveillance in prisons, the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services has decided to install Internet Protocol (IP)-based CCTV cameras at the Kalpa sub-jail in Kinnaur district. A dedicated control room will also be set up within the jail premises to monitor the footage in real time.

At present, 25 inmates are lodged in Kalpa sub-jail, including 23 undertrials and two convicts. The facility, which has a total capacity of 26 inmates, currently houses no women prisoners.

Expansion Of Surveillance Across Jails

Apart from Kalpa, IP-based CCTV cameras will also be installed in the Mandi District Jail, Kullu, the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), and the Local Data Centre (LDC) at the State’s Prisons Headquarters. The initiative is part of a larger effort to upgrade security infrastructure across Himachal Pradesh’s prisons.

To implement this, the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services recently invited e-tenders for the supply, design, installation, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of the surveillance systems at these locations.

A department spokesperson highlighted the urgent need for these upgrades, stating:

“Several existing CCTV cameras have become outdated, while many require maintenance. The new system will ensure better monitoring and security within prison premises.”

With the installation of advanced IP-based cameras, authorities aim to enhance surveillance efficiency, improve incident response times, and ensure greater safety within prison facilities.
