In a truly remarkable tale of unwavering determination and resilience, meet Rajkaran Baraua, a 56-year-old security guard who recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully clearing his MSc (Maths) exam after a staggering 25-year journey. This extraordinary achievement is a testament to the power of perseverance and the indomitable human spirit.
Rajkaran’s path to success was far from easy, marked by 23 failed attempts and numerous challenges. Despite facing a lack of family support, financial constraints, and the instability of employment, he clung to his passion for mathematics. Juggling double shifts as a security guard and taking on various odd jobs, he confronted a myriad of obstacles on his journey towards earning a master’s degree.
The turning point in Rajkaran’s story came in 2021 when he finally triumphed over his academic challenges. However, the joy of his accomplishment was initially a private celebration behind closed doors. He shared, “I jumped and gave myself a high five. But I couldn’t go out and tell anyone because my employers used to taunt their children by giving my example.” Despite this, Rajkaran remained steadfast, and now, having left that job, he can openly share his triumph with the world.
Over the years, Rajkaran’s story garnered attention, especially after a report by various magazines and newspapers in 2015. The recognition and encouragement he received from the public and media served as a significant motivator during the times of his struggle. He reflected, “It was a huge dose of motivation.”
Currently earning a modest income of Rs 5,000 per month as a security guard, Rajkaran supplements his livelihood by working as a help at a bungalow, earning food and shelter. The financial challenges he faced were substantial, having spent Rs 2 lakh over 25 years on books, exam fees, and related expenses to attain his MSc maths degree.
Despite the hurdles, Rajkaran remains optimistic and shares a humorous take on his decision not to marry, saying, “Who would have married me? Besides, I was married to my dream.” Having already obtained an MA in 1996, Rajkaran’s journey through numerous setbacks in pursuit of his MSc is nothing short of inspirational. From failing in his first attempt in 1997 to finally succeeding in 2021, his story highlights the importance of effort and patience in overcoming challenges.
Rajkaran Baraua’s extraordinary journey serves as a beacon of inspiration for anyone facing obstacles in the pursuit of their dreams, proving that with determination and perseverance, one can triumph against all odds.
