76 Fire Safety Projects Initiated At SCB Medical College, Odisha

Appearing before the court as per its directive issued on March 4, Sarangi provided detailed information regarding the status of the projects

The Director General of Fire & Emergency Services, Sudhansu Sarangi, informed the Orissa High Court on Wednesday about significant progress regarding the implementation of fire safety measures at SCB Medical College Hospital (SCBMCH). Sarangi revealed that a total of 76 projects have been initiated to install fire-fighting systems and make structural changes in the buildings to enhance their effectiveness in case of fire emergencies.

Appearing before the court as per its directive issued on March 4, Sarangi provided detailed information regarding the status of the projects. He stated that administrative approvals have already been granted for 62 projects, with the tender process for these projects currently underway. However, for the remaining 14 projects, each of which costs Rs 75 lakh and above, administrative approval is still pending. Sarangi assured the court that these pending approvals are expected to be cleared within a week’s time.

In a comprehensive summary presented to the court, Sarangi outlined the specifics of the buildings and proposed fire safety measures along with a clear timeline for their implementation. This demonstrated the seriousness with which the issue of fire safety at the hospital is being addressed.

In response to Sarangi’s presentation, the division bench comprising Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh and Justice M S Raman expressed their appreciation for the efforts made by the Director General and his team in addressing the issue promptly and effectively. They acknowledged the importance of ensuring robust fire safety measures in such critical healthcare facilities.

The bench further directed the DG Fire Services to submit an affidavit detailing the progress of the ongoing works during the next hearing. This indicates the court’s keen interest in monitoring the implementation of fire safety measures at SCB Medical College Hospital to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
